PopIQ Privacy Policy
For the PopIQ Chrome extension
Last updated: 17 September 2026
Applies to: PopIQ Chrome extension, version 1.3.1 and later
Who we are
PopIQ is made by Made By Purple Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 14510983), registered office: Digilab, Barking Learning Centre, 2 Town Square, Barking, Essex, IG11 7NB, United Kingdom ("PopIQ", "we", "us"). For anything about privacy, email hello@madebypurple.co.uk.
The short version
- Everything PopIQ stores stays in your own browser, on your own device.
- We don't have accounts, servers, analytics or advertising. Nothing you do in PopIQ is sent to us or to anyone else.
- We don't sell, share or transfer your data, because we never receive it.
- Uninstalling PopIQ deletes everything it stored.
What PopIQ stores on your device
PopIQ saves the following using Chrome's built-in extension storage (chrome.storage). This data never leaves your browser.
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your settings: gated sites, topics, lessons per gate, unlock mode, time bank options, PIN (if you set one), presentation mode, meeting sites | So PopIQ works the way you set it up |
| Learning progress: Intentional Moments (XP), level, streak, completed lessons, which questions you've passed or missed | To track progress and avoid repeating questions you've mastered |
| My Decks: the cards you create or import (terms, definitions, explanations, alternative answers) and the review schedule for each card | So your own material comes back at spaced intervals. Only you can see it |
| Time bank: your minute balance, daily allowance, and minutes earned and spent over the last 14 days | To give you scroll time you've earned and show your weekly summary |
| Lifelines: how many lifeline tokens you hold, tokens earned and spent, and when you last used each lifeline | So lifelines, cooldowns and your Rescues stats work |
| Gate activity: the domains you've gated, when each was last unlocked, skip counts, and a local log of up to 1,000 recent PopIQ events (for example "lesson answered on youtube.com") | For your dashboard, streaks and unlock timers |
| Temporary tab status: which open tab is showing a gated site (website origin only, for example https://www.youtube.com/), and whether it's visible | So the time bank only counts down while you're actually on a gated site. Cleared when you close the browser |
PopIQ does not record the pages you read, what you type, your searches, or your activity on sites you haven't chosen to gate.
Permissions and why PopIQ needs them
| Permission | What it's used for |
|---|---|
| storage | Saving your settings, progress, decks and time bank on your device |
| alarms | Updating the time bank and unlock timers on a schedule |
| idle | Pausing the time bank when you step away from your computer |
| Site access (all websites) | Checking whether the site you're opening is on your gated list, and showing the lesson or time bank reminder on it. PopIQ doesn't read or collect page content |
| history (optional, off by default) | Only if you click Suggest from History and allow it: PopIQ looks at your recent history on your device to suggest well-known distracting sites to gate. Nothing is saved or sent, and nothing is added unless you tick it |
Files you import or export
- When you import a .txt, .csv, .tsv or PopIQ deck file, it's read inside your browser and the cards are saved on your device.
- Exports (CSV or PopIQ deck file) are only created when you click export, and are saved wherever you choose.
Third parties
PopIQ doesn't use any third-party services, analytics, advertising, payment processors or AI providers. If we add a feature that needs one (for example payments or AI card generation), we'll update this policy first, explain what's shared and why, and ask for your permission where the law requires it.
Chrome Web Store user data policy
PopIQ's use of information follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy (link to https://developer.chrome.com/docs/webstore/program-policies/user-data-faq), including the Limited Use requirements. We don't transfer, sell or use your data for advertising, credit decisions or any purpose unrelated to PopIQ's single purpose: helping you learn in the moments you'd otherwise lose to distraction.
Your rights and choices
Because your data is stored only on your device, you control it directly:
- See it: your dashboard, history, decks and settings pages show what PopIQ holds.
- Export it: in Settings, under Your data, click Export all my data to download everything PopIQ stores as one file. You can also export any deck as CSV or a PopIQ deck file.
- Delete it: in Settings, under Your data, click Delete all my data to erase everything PopIQ stores and start fresh. You can also delete single decks on the My Decks page, or uninstall PopIQ.
- Withdraw history access: remove the optional history permission at any time in Chrome's extension settings.
We don't hold a copy of your data, so we can't access, correct or delete it for you. Under UK GDPR you can still contact us with any question, or complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Children
PopIQ isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly market it to them.
Security
Your data is protected by Chrome's extension storage, which other websites and extensions can't read. Anyone with access to your computer and Chrome profile could see it. If that's a concern, use a PIN, a separate Chrome profile or your device's own lock.
Changes to this policy
If we change how PopIQ handles data, we'll update this page and the "Last updated" date. For significant changes, we'll also tell you in the extension before they take effect.
