PopIQ for Android: Privacy Policy
Last updated: 12 October 2026
Applies to: the PopIQ Android app, version 3.4 and later
Who we are
PopIQ is made by Made By Purple Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 14510983), registered office: Digilab, Barking Learning Centre, 2 Town Square, Barking, Essex, IG11 7NB, United Kingdom ("PopIQ", "we", "us"). For anything about privacy, email hello@madebypurple.co.uk.
The short version
- PopIQ collects no personal data at all.
- Everything it stores stays on your phone or tablet.
- There are no accounts, no servers, no adverts, no analytics and no trackers.
- Nothing is shared or sold, because nothing ever reaches us.
- Uninstalling PopIQ deletes everything it stored.
What PopIQ stores on your device
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your settings: which apps show a task, which learning packs are on, the mode, task types, time bank options, the parent PIN (stored as a scrambled version, not the digits) | So PopIQ works the way you set it up |
| Learning progress: IQ points, level, streak, which questions you've mastered or missed, badges | To show progress and avoid repeating what you've learned |
| Time bank: your minutes balance, and minutes earned and spent over recent days | To give you the time you've earned |
| Your own list: any short tasks you add for the "one small thing" task | So you can tick them off |
| Your intentions: what you typed when PopIQ asked why you were opening an app | So it can show you what you said last time |
| The names of apps you chose to gate, and when each was last unlocked | So PopIQ knows when to show a task |
| How long you usually spend in each app you chose to gate, worked out on the device from Android's usage statistics | So the time bank counts the time you actually spent, and so PopIQ can wait longer before asking on apps you only open briefly |
| Weekly labels, badges and surprise rewards you have earned | To show your progress and give you your weekly label |
| A short troubleshooting log of PopIQ's own decisions (app package names and times only) | So you can see why the time bank is or isn't counting. It only leaves your device if you choose to export it |
PopIQ does not record what you do inside other apps, what you type in them, your messages, your photos, your contacts or your location.
Permissions and why PopIQ asks
| Permission | What it's used for |
|---|---|
| Usage access | To see which app is in front, so PopIQ knows when to show a task. It reads the app's name, not anything inside it |
| Display over other apps | To show the task on top of the app you opened |
| Notifications | To show the timer and the "paused" states, and because Android requires a notification for an app that runs in the background |
| Physical activity (optional) | Only if you turn on the step task or the driving pause. Used to count steps and to tell when you're probably in a vehicle. Processed on the device |
| Microphone (optional) | Only if you turn on "say it out loud". Speech is recognised on the device, is never recorded or stored, and is never sent to us |
Every optional permission is asked for only when you switch that feature on, and PopIQ keeps working without it.
Children
PopIQ can be set up by a parent for a child, with learning packs for Early Years through to Key Stage 5 and a parent PIN that stops a child changing the settings.
- PopIQ collects no data from anyone, including children. There is nothing to send, share or delete on our side.
- There are no adverts, no in-app purchases in the child experience, no links out to the web, no sign-in and no social features.
- The parent PIN stops a child changing PopIQ's settings. It does not stop them uninstalling the app or turning off usage access in Android's own settings.
- Progress is stored per device, so if a parent and child share a phone they will share one set of progress.
If you're a parent and you'd like anything explained, email us at the address above.
Third parties
PopIQ uses no advertising networks, no analytics services and no AI services. It uses Google Play Services on the device for activity recognition, only if you turn on the step task or the driving pause, and only on the device. If we ever add a feature that needs an outside service, we'll update this policy first and explain what is shared.
Your rights and choices
Your data stays on your device, so you control it directly:
- See it: the home and parent screens show what PopIQ holds.
- Export it: Settings, Your data, Export all my data, which saves one file wherever you choose.
- Share it: your weekly share card is only created and shared when you tap Share or Save image.
- Delete it: Settings, Your data, Delete all my data, or uninstall PopIQ.
- Withdraw a permission: turn the matching feature off in PopIQ, or remove the permission in Android's settings.
We hold no copy of your data, so we can't access, correct or delete it for you. Under UK GDPR you can still contact us with any question, or complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Security
Your data is stored in PopIQ's private storage, which other apps can't read. Anyone with access to your unlocked device could see it, so use your device's own lock if that matters to you.
Changes to this policy
If we change how PopIQ handles data, we'll update this page and the date at the top. For significant changes, we'll tell you in the app before they take effect.
